"The Danger of the Single Story"

Most recently my favorite book has been Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. If you're part of the African diaspora this book is for you. Also if you're a human being this book is for you! Adichie's storytelling is vivid and laugh out loud funny. The characters are so real, I can almost see and hear them. I am some of them, and I know the rest of them.

I was introduced Adichie through a post of a Ted Talk circulating on Facebook. Yes, I am happy to say social media is the source of nearly all my information. She discussed the danger of the single story. I watched, rapt. Now that I think of it, that talk probably has a lot on influence on both Kayarize's Instagram page and this blog, where I focus my attention on beautifully ordinary things related to Africa. Since I watched that talk I have gobbled up anything I could find on YouTube with Adichie; talks, interviews, commencement addresses, news appearances. She delivers every time. I have enjoyed how people around the world love and see themselves in her characters the same way that I have done.

I have come to regard her as one of the greatest thinkers of our time. I have only read the one book but from what I have heard the rest are pretty damn fantastic.

Excuse me while I allow myself to get sucked into the vortex again. I have just gone on YouTube to watch the The Danger of a Single Story again, and the good old Autoplay has queued me up a treat.
