Maya Angelou is remembered by many things, but nothing greater than her inspirational quotes. The quote, “Nothing can dim the light that shines from within”, has been inspirational to many. In this quote, Maya was talking about the dreams and personalities that people have. Dreams are personal and intrinsic. They are embedded within us by our desires and the need to be better. Once we take charge of ensuring that that dream is fulfilled, no one and nothing can stop us.

We are often faced by challenges and naysayers. In the world we live in today, everyone with access to a computer or mobile phone purports to dictate to people they do not know as to how they should lead their lives. Self esteems are lowered and depression is on the rise. However, if we realize that there is more to us than what we show the world and bring that light out to shine, no one will be able to put us down. Similarly, our personalities are what differentiate us from the masses. Our happiness, joy, or anguish is connected to our souls. How we express ourselves determines how others will treat us.

Taking social media for instance, young people are forced to present to the world versions of themselves that are curated to get the most reactions from people they do not know. In effect, they lose a part of themselves each time they feel the need to change. However, realizing that our personalities are the lights that shine within us will help many young people overcome the pressure of being socially correct. Standing by and showcasing their true selves is them letting their light shine for all to see, which could in turn inspire others.
