Black Women's Equal Pay Day with Lean In

As a business that supports equality, we are partnering with LeanIn.Org (a nonprofit organization founded by Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg) to highlight the unfairness of the gender pay gap on Black women's Equal Pay Day.

Women on average are paid 20% less than men.  If you break the pay gap down by race and ethnicity, it is worse: Black women are paid 37% less and Hispanic women are paid 46% less.  In fact, over the course of her career, a Black woman will typically lose nearly $880,000 (Source: National Women's Law Center NWLC, August 2016).

Businesses like ours are offering 37% discounts on our Queening Collection to all customers on Black women's Equal Pay Day, July 31st, to highlight the inherent unfairness of this gender pay gap.

Q: What is Equal Pay Day?
Equal Pay Day, April 4, 2017, marked how far women collectively needed to work into 2017 to catch up to what men were paid in 2016.  To punctuate the day, Leanin.Org worked with Lyft, Procter & Gamble, LUNA Bar, Salesforce, and hundreds of businesses to offer 20% discounts and special offers.
Because Black and Hispanic women face an even larger wage gap, they need to work further into 2017 to catch up.  On Black and Hispanic women's Equal Pay Days (July 31st and November 2, respectively), we're offering larger discounts to draw attention to the unfairness of earning even less.

Q: Why is the gender pay gap bigger for Black and Hispanic women?
Industry and occupation account for some of the pay gap.  Black and Hispanic women are overrepresented in low-paying jobs and underrepresented in high-paying jobs - and they're paid less than white men in both.  At every education level, there's still a larger pay gap for Black and Hispanic women that economists believe is likely related to a combination of both gender bias and racial bias.
